Vinyl Windows
Vinyl is an amalgam of chemicals called Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC for short. It is a very cheap and easy product to produce and is used in many applications. It is used in both the frame of the window, but also on the surface of the glass itself. The vinyl frame is very durable and energy efficient. Many homes replace wood or steel window frames with newer vinyl ones. Windows coated with a thin layer of PVC will block nearly all heat from light entering or exiting your home, while still allowing 100% of the actual light in. To increase efficiency, most manufacturers recommend a double paned window to increase insulation and decrease energy loss.
Replacement Vinyl Windows
Due to increased energy costs, many people are replacing their windows with more energy efficient solutions. Vinyl windows are leading the pack due to their high efficiency rate. Many companies can replace your windows with vinyl and leave the old frame in tact. Most companies, such as Anderson Windows and Doors, stress replacing both the window and the frame. Their reasoning is due to the fact that energy and heat can also be lost through the frame itself. It might seem slightly expensive to replace your windows with vinyl, but in the long run it will pay off.
Vinyl Replacement Storm Windows
Storm windows are found in areas with colder climates and frequent storms. They are retrofit (installed outside of old window) into the window frame to help with insulation and heat regulation. Before, storm windows were just made of glass and were not very good at helping to insulated the home and prevent heat from escaping through the glass windows. Now with vinyl coated glass and frames, efficiency is higher than it has ever been. The storm window helps by trapping heat inside the home. Another key element is the space between the actual window and the storm window. This pocket of air creates further insulation from the weather, and keeps the home heated more effectively.
Solar Screens
Solar screens are another effective way to regulate energy flow in your household/office. By using a thin sheet of metal, usually aluminum, and another layer of vinyl, screens can be created and placed over vinyl windows to maximize energy flow. These screens are also useful if you want to maintain the temperature in the room without allowing more sunlight to enter. Solar screens also allow the person/people inside to gaze outside while blocking the interior view from the outside.
